Job Description:

Role Purpose: The Registered Nurse First Assist provides direct patient care to perioperative patients, and assists the surgeon with intra-operative procedures, while using the nursing process pre-operatively, intra-operatively, and post-operatively.

• Plans for patient care by collaborating with health team members to develop, coordinate, and implement a perioperative plan of care unique to individual needs.
• Has excellent knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology and operative technique specific to general surgical procedures to work in collaboration with the surgeon.
• Verifies patient identity in accordance with hospital policy using the patient's name and date of birth. Participates in complete and accurate "Time-Outs" prior to induction, incision, and entrance of any additional staff/surgeons 100% of the time.
• Adheres to all Universal Protocol policies required by Joint Commission including enforcing and verifying site marking prior to entrance to the OR and all other patient safety standards.
• Appropriately assists the surgeon according to specialty procedures and physician preference while utilizing sterile technique and universal precautions.
• Provides surgical field exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning and sponging techniques. Handles and dissects tissue in collaboration with the surgeon.
• Sutures muscle, fascia, subcutaneous and skin tissue in collaboration with the surgeon, places drains as surgically indicated, and administers medications peri-operatively as directed by surgeon or anesthesiologist.
• Demonstrates fiscal responsibility and proper judgement when opening supplies. Updates/communicates changes to surgeon preference cards.
• Displays problems solving skills, using critical thinking when making patient-care decisions, notifies surgeons of changes to patient condition and any other pertinent information.
• Exhibits excellent communication skills, committed to patient satisfaction 100% of the time, will use service recovery skills. Promotes teamwork within the department, provides assistance to cover departmental call.
• Retains ability to be utilized as scrub or circulator when RNFA duties not necessary. Assists in precepting and helps in training new employees.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
• RN Associate Degree or RN Diploma School
• Current Illinois RN License, Current CNOR certification
• 3 months to 1 year technical field, 1 to 3 years supervision
• Proof of completion approved RNFA course
• Has a thorough understanding of all aspects of the peri-operative setting.

Physical Requirements:
• Lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling up to 10 lbs.
• Stooping, kneeling and/or crouching daily.
• Standing or walking more than 8 hours a day.
• Running to respond to patient emergencies.
• Reaching, grasping, fingering, and/or feeling more than 8 hours a day.
• Visual acuity in order to correctly distinguish skin tone variations, evidence of IV infiltration, infection; able to read telemetry, blood pressure gauges, etc.
• Audio acuity in order to correctly distinguish various body sounds (i.e., respirations, heart tones, bowel sounds).
• Audio acuity to discern sounds made by various types of machinery or equipment that would indicate dangerous or improper operation.
